A series of events planned in the museums of the Museum System of the City of Las Cruces for the celebration of the CUARTOCENTENNIAL: 400 Year Anniversary of the founding of New Mexico by Don Juan de Oņate include: Performances: Ballet Folklorico de la Tierra Del Encanto Annual Performance at Oņate High School December 5 & 6, 1997. Maestro Jose Tena and his talented dancers give stellar performance each year, and have for the past 16 years. While this performance emphasizes Mexican Ballet Folklorico it cannot deny the rich dance tradition that has its roots in Spain, and Europe, as well as, in Mexico. This performance highlights the 60 or more school age students that Mr. Tena teaches through the medium of the Ballet Folklorico Mr. Tena is able to emphasize to his students the pride and value of their diverse heritage. These annual performances, eagerly awaited by the community and very well received, are the culmination of a years dedicated hard work with his students in the Cultural Center, and mark the beginning of another year of great work in the community. The collaboration with the Cultural Center and the Ballet Folklorico has had an important impact on the youth of Las Cruces. The Cuartocentennial allows for a year long special emphasis to be given the importance of the Spanish influence on the Mexican Ballet Folklorico. Plans are already in the works for the December 1998 performance honoring the Cuartocentennial and Don Juan de Oņate. Continuing the commemoration through music - Commemorating the Spanish influence on music in the region - February 19, 1998, 2 special guitar workshops in the LCPS and an evening performance in the Cultural Complex featuring The Music from Spain played by renowned Spanish Classical guitarist, David Burgess. This special event highlights the influences of Spanish music on Latin America showing that the colors and rhythms that seems so familiar have deep roots from Spain, while at the same time belong to the region.
Music has a powerful ability to cross boundaries and penetrate walls that instructors sometimes have difficulties breaching, thus giving them a tool with which to teach other life affirming skills. The student is also, introduced in a participatory and positive manner to the rich cultural heritage of the region. Performances: Dance 1.)
