What did you drive in the 50's

It all started a few weeks ago with a crypic message from the District Executive Director that arrived in the District staff mailbox:" What did you drive in the 50s and 60s? - Turn up the sound" Loren.

Whitin days, response to this odd request created a chain-mail that kept growing and growing with comments that - if not too serious - demonstrates two things - District 5520 has a team of Rotarians that are on top of their internet communication skill and that many share - if not an adventurous youth - a fiery past in their transportation record!

We know now that hard-working Rotarians enjoy raising to a "fun" challenge whenever given the opportunity, and in the light of this innocent message "Sharing Rotary" takes a whole new meaning for the D.5520 extended family of Rotarians...

To all that participated - thank you for your comment - to all other Rotarians who would like to share their (car) memories - we will keep this colum open for you. Do not hesitate to send your comment & picture to the District Newsletter. We'll post it along with the following.

I was barely old enough to drive in the sixties but my first car was a 63 Chrysler Imperial with a Hemi. Gas was only 29 cents a gallon.

Rick Akins, PDG

I had a 1959 Chevy Impala 2dr Hardtop with a 1964 409 V8 with as stick. Then I had a 1965 GTO 2dr Hardtop. Those were fun days to cruise in Tulsa, OK. We’d cruise Penningtons Drive In, Boots Drive In, and the A&W stand. Then go out and drag race. - If we all had the cars we drove in the 50's & 60's, we could really have a great car show (with a high dollar value).

brownSonny Brown, District 5520 Governor Emeritus A ’56 -2 door Green and White Plymouth Fury with tail fins I rec’d after graduation. Lots of pick up, redheads, brunettes and blonds! I drove it to Austin in ’57 to meet my blind date, Ann, my bride of 51 years ago…the car had no influence on her decision to say “Yes”. I saw it in 1997 when I went to Havana, Cuba for Rotary! Still beautiful!

edwarsdDennis Edwards, PDG

I drove a two-tone blue 1951 Pontiac, it was lowered in the front and back, had drag pipes, pinstriped and all of the other crazy things kids did to their cars in the mid-50s. We drove up and down the main street of
Clovis, with all of its deep dips, about every night and on the weekends. When gas was a quarter a gallon, you could afford too. When I went to UNM, I graduated to a beautiful 1956 red and white Crown Victoria Ford
convertible, one of the most outstanding cars I ever owned, wish I had it back now.
Those were the days!
bassMarti Bass, Central Action Team It has been a hoot reading all of your emails....what memories they bring back of cruising and hitting the favorite drive-ins...especially Frank's Drive In at Lomas and Washington in ABQ!! I didn't have may own car, but the memories of being in the fine rides of my friends have certainly been revived.

I wasn’t old enough to drive until 1977. My first vehicle was a ‘72 Ford pickup with a stick shift. Loved it! We would all pile in the front seat and go to the Dairy Queen for a cherry lemon lime.

boveryRobert L. Boverie, District Grants Chair

I drove a 1940 Ford Standard 2 door sedan, that was customized with no door handles, frenched headlights, lowered front and back, and a little bit of engine work. We cruised South Lubbock, stopping at the Hi-D-Ho Drive in, went to the drive-in movie with at least 2 people in the trunk, and all of that. It was the best car I ever had, and for sure I wish I had it back.

Sorry to disappoint you - in the 50’s, that’s all my parents allowed me to drive!

My first car was a beat up 'ol '52 Chevy.  I remember changing the head out twice in one day because I had blown it and it wasn't milled right.  With the help of friends, I still made my date that night.
Next up was a '57 ford convertible, solid black with custom all black nylon interior.  Had a Hearst "four on the floor, short throw" and Cherry Bomb pipes outside.  Long bench seats front and back.  Cruised all through college in the hot Phx. sun and it made it back to Dayton, Ohio four times.  It held five in the trunk for the drive-in and was a favorite for "Keggers" in the dessert.  I remember driving it for almost a year without a clutch.  Sounds impossible but, it could be done.
Certainly, it would be fun for a show car now.  However, after giving up 'Bikes we now have a little Miata convertible for weekend thrills.  Kathleen enjoys driving it as much as I do so we often flip a coin or take turns. Never to old to enjoy a fun ride!

I have a high school friend that still goes cruisin on the weekends. Here are two of his oldies! Enjoy the attachments!

mcJill McQueary, District Vocational Service Coordinator & 4 Way Test Essay Chair My car was little & a faded red and I can't even remember the name of it but I was able to cruise the A&W with it. No one ever asked me to drag race or to borrow it! It did have a good trunk for taking friends to the drive-in with me.

parkerTimothy Parker, DGN

Uh uh uh I wasn't even born yet BUT my first car was a 63 1/2 ford galaxie 500 two door with the sloped back, 390 2 barrel, 63,000 original mile when i got it, my dad found it in a barn, looked brand new, second car was a 64 mustang bright orange

scottRoberta Scott, AG, Central Action Team

I drove my Dad's old 1951 Ford and in Las Cruces, we cruised around the Shamrock and maybe stopped and got a Shamburger and a Lime coke.

chuckChuck Tallman, District Youth Exchange Chair emeritus & Los Alamos two times Past President

Soon after graduating from College and with an engineering job
I thought I should have a nice car.  I bought an Oldsmobile "Olds 88"
