High school juniors from across New Mexico and Far West Texas spent a transformative week at Manzano Mountain Retreat, participating in District 5520's RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) camps. Separated into boys' and girls' weeks, 130 students challenged themselves through high ropes courses, climbing walls, speaking contests, and community service projects—all designed to develop self-awareness, leadership skills, and community-mindedness.
The impact went far beyond adventure activities. Students participated in a Financial Reality Fair, learned from inspiring speakers, and engaged in workshops that pushed them to grow as leaders. One participant captured the experience: "I've become a better listener and have gained more self confidence. I've also made amazing friends who uplift and listen to me. I hope to work with the club in the near future."
Another student reflected on a fundamental shift in their understanding of leadership itself: "I learned that leadership isn't being the smartest—it's being present and real."
The week culminated in moments of courage and breakthrough, like students leaping from a 30-foot pole to catch a trapeze on the high ropes course—a physical manifestation of the risks these young leaders are learning to take in their communities.
What made this possible? Forty Rotary clubs across District 5520 contributed sponsorships ensuring that no student or family paid for camp. Thirty-five counselors and staff members volunteered their time to mentor the next generation of community leaders.
These students aren't just attending camp—they're preparing to transform their schools, neighborhoods, and eventually, their professions with the leadership principles they've learned.
