In just six hours on a Saturday morning, volunteers at Crossroads Bible Church in Los Alamos assembled 25,000 meals for families across northern New Mexico.

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos partnered with Meals of Hope and The Food Depot for their annual meal-packing event, bringing together volunteers of all ages and abilities to address food insecurity in the region. From 9 AM to 3 PM, assembly lines of volunteers measured, scooped, sealed, and boxed nutritious meals that will reach families through local food distribution networks.

Efficiency That Scales

What makes this program particularly powerful is its cost-effectiveness: every dollar donated provides three complete meals. That means the 25,000 meals packed represent approximately $8,300 in community investment—a remarkable return for addressing hunger at scale.

The meals assembled aren't just emergency rations. They're nutritionally balanced food packages designed to support families experiencing food insecurity, whether due to economic hardship, unexpected emergencies, or gaps in other assistance programs.

Community Collaboration

The partnership between Los Alamos Rotary, Meals of Hope, and The Food Depot demonstrates how local service organizations can leverage each other's strengths. Meals of Hope provides the meal-packing system and nutritional expertise. The Food Depot handles distribution through their established network of food pantries and community organizations. Los Alamos Rotary mobilizes volunteers and raises funds to make it happen.

This model—combining logistics expertise, distribution infrastructure, and volunteer labor—creates efficiency that none of the organizations could achieve alone.

All Hands Welcome

One of the event's most inclusive aspects: volunteers of all ages and abilities can participate meaningfully. The assembly-line approach means everyone from young children to seniors can contribute, making it a true community effort that builds connection while addressing need.

For families who can't attend in person, the option to make tax-deductible donations extends participation beyond those who can show up on a Saturday morning.

Sustained Impact

This isn't a one-time effort. Los Alamos Rotary returns to this project year after year, building on relationships with partner organizations and creating predictable support that families and food banks can count on.

Twenty-five thousand meals. One Saturday. One community showing up for its neighbors.
