50 Years of Service: Rio Grande Rotary Celebrates Half a Century of Community Impact
Las Cruces, NM — September 12, 2025
Rio Grande Rotary is marking its 50th anniversary with something most organizations can only aspire to: founding members still actively serving alongside the next generation of community leaders.
Since 1975, this Las Cruces club has built a legacy of sustained impact through programs that address education, health, accessibility, and youth development. Their approach is simple but powerful—identify a community need, create a solution, and keep showing up year after year.
Education & Youth Development
The Dictionary Project has brought literacy tools and civic lessons to third-graders throughout the Las Cruces school district for years. Through their partnership with Dress the Child, the club helps clothe hundreds of students annually, removing barriers to school attendance and participation.
Their Student of the Month program brings young leaders from local high schools into Rotary meetings—creating a two-way exchange where students share the realities of youth experiences while learning Rotary values. The 8th Grade Essay Contest challenges students to examine how their values shape their actions, planting seeds for future community leadership.
Many of these students go on to attend RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), where Rio Grande Rotary's sponsorship has helped develop future advocates, engineers, and even district governors.
Environmental & Accessibility Impact
Through Neighborwoods tree-planting initiatives, the club helps homeowners conserve electricity by creating shade while beautifying neighborhoods—a practical approach to both environmental sustainability and economic relief.
Their partnership with the NM Ramp Project addresses accessibility head-on, helping people with disabilities gain independence in their own homes through wheelchair ramp construction.
Creative Community Support
The club's annual Yard Sale has become a Las Cruces institution, benefiting Mesilla Valley Hospice while giving the community a sustainable way to exchange gently used items. It's practical charity—meeting multiple needs at once.
The Power of Longevity
What makes Rio Grande Rotary's 50th anniversary remarkable isn't just the breadth of their work—it's the presence of founding members still actively participating in service projects. That kind of sustained commitment creates institutional knowledge, community trust, and the ability to see long-term impact unfold.
Five decades of showing up. Hundreds of students supported. Countless families served. That's Service Above Self in action.
